GRCCC Concerned Over Glenfield Waste Water Treatment Plant Failure

9 December 2013

Media Release

The Georges River Combined Councils’ Committee (GRCCC), representing Councils, residents and recreationists in the Georges River catchment, has expressed serious concern about the environmental impacts resulting from the Glenfield Wastewater Treatment Plant failure which occurred on 22 November 2013.

As a result of the plant failure, approximately 150 mega litres of untreated wastewater began flowing directly into Bunbury-Curran Creek and into the Georges River.

Sydney Water acknowledged that a valve failure at the plant, which combined with an intense downpour and high inflow of wastewater, flooded the pumping station.

“The Committee urges Sydney Water to take stronger preventative measures to ensure this does not happen again,” said GRCCC Chairperson Cr Naji Peter Najjar. “When accidents of this magnitude impact upon human and environmental health, we contend that change is needed.”

Sydney Water is undertaking a full review of the incident at the Glenfield Plant and is conducting environmental monitoring.

The GRCCC anticipates the results of the review and aims to increase awareness within Councils of those findings. Specifically, the GRCCC recommends improvement in two key areas:

Communications

  • Develop a formal information and reporting process to better inform Georges River Councils about major environmental incidents

Management Response

  • Conduct a thorough review of all procedures and infrastructure, and communicate findings to stakeholders
  • Continue an appropriate level of ecological monitoring
  • Improve capacities to incorporate and finance solutions to current methods of wastewater treatment.

The GRCCC is an incorporated association of nine local government councils working in partnership with state and federal government agencies and community representatives to improve the health of the Georges River catchment. The GRCCC represents local government in the Georges River Catchment of NSW. Member councils include Rockdale City, Sutherland Shire, Kogarah City, Hurstville City, Bankstown City, Liverpool City, Fairfield City, Campbelltown City and Wollondilly Shire councils.
