River Ecosystem Program

Within this program the GRCCC leads an alliance of Councils to improve urban water management with particular focus on stormwater and urban runoff to achieve sustainable water quality and conservation outcomes.  The program also aims to improve and protect urban bushland and creeks, urban wildlife and habitats of rare and endangered flora and fauna.  Finally, the program aims to improve the sustainability performance of local Councils, small businesses, community organisation and householders in urban areas.

The program is based on the project objectives of the Mid & Upper Georges River Urban Sustainability Initiatives; however the aims and outcomes of the program are applicable to the whole catchment.  A program cluster group has been established which consists of storm water engineers and other technical officers from all of our 9 member councils as well as representatives from the Sydney Metropolitan Catchment Management Authority.

To date all member councils have identified 5 key projects within their own LGA’s that meet the objectives of the project and are reporting on these at each cluster meeting.  We have also begun a series of workshops involving storm water engineers and strategic planners on the development of a regional agreement that aims to achieve consistent, best practice urban water management planning and policy across the catchment.
