Volunteers are sought to participate in the Community River Health Monitoring Program, which gauges the ecosystem health of the entire Botany Bay catchment. Sampling will take place in streams and foreshore sites in the Georges River.
Volunteers will receive FREE training in macroinvertebrate (waterbugs) monitoring during sampling.
Community organisations, school groups and Bushcare groups are encouraged to volunteer.
The next round of sampling will be:
• Saturday 21 April, 8am to 4pm in Appin
• Saturday 28 April, 9am to 1pm in Lime Kiln Bay, Oatley
• Sunday 20 May, 9am to 1pm at Mill Creek, Menai

GRCCC presents to the 6th Australian Stream Management Conference in Canberra and calls for the Development of regional water quality and catchment guidelines for the conservation of aquatic ecosystems in the Georges River Catchment.

Taking two State and three Regional awards, the Georges River Combined Councils’ Committee (GRCCC) was honoured alongside other organisations for environmental management achievements during the 2011 Keep Australia Beautiful awards ceremony on Friday 2 December.
The Georges Riverkeeper Program won the State Litter and Waste Management Award for accomplishment in litter prevention, management and education. The GRCCC Community River Health Monitoring Program and the Riverkeeper Program together won the State Environmental Protection Award for outstanding achievement in the protection of the natural environment, flora, fauna and biodiversity.

Recent sightings of platypus in the upper Georges River gave a mixed warning about the plight of the elusive mammal, bringing to light the need for education and awareness and tighter regulations on illegal fishing equipment.
