Aboriginal Land Councils have been established under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983 (NSW) to represent and protect the interests and further the aspirations of members and the broader Aboriginal community. There are five Local Aboriginal Land Councils (LALC) that operate within the Georges River Catchment, representing the original inhabitants of the area: Metropolitan, La Perouse, Tharrawal, Gandangarra and Deerubbin.
